The proverb means to remedy a defect at its earliest state; and if that is done a lot of trouble will be averted. If a tear in a cloth is stitched in time, it will stand wear for quite a long time than if attempts are made to patch it up, when the tear becomes bigger. The proverb is applicable to every sphere of life. We often suffer for not being on our guard at the first sign of trouble. A man falls sick, but does not care about his ailment, even when it gets worse he remains indifferent to it. When he does call in a doctor, his illness has perhaps taken a serious turn. If he had taken precautionary measures at the outset or consulted a physician, much trouble might have been averted.

Similarly, we should keep a strict watch over the activities of our children. If a boy is found to have stolen a thing, he should be taken to task severely, lest he should repeat the mistake. He must be made to understand that stealing is a crime. If that is done firmly and timely, he will take the lesson to heart. So, the wise course of action is that we should not put off till tomorrow what we can do today.
