It was summer vacation. My friend invited me to Hyderabad. I was filled with joy at the prospect of seeing the South for the first time. It was early morning I bought a ticket and got into second class compartment of the Deccan Express. The train started. Soon it picked up speed and sped through smaller stations. There were many passengers in my compartment. Some of them were reading newspapers, some were engaged in talks; some were enjoying the sights outside. The train touched Agra junction. I took breakfast.
I ordered the canteen bearer to supply me with meal at Gwalior. A Ticket Checker came and checked the tickets. One man was found without a ticket. He paid the charges and the fine. From time to time hawkers would get into our compartment to sell articles. Sometimes a beggar would get in and ask for alms. At Gwalior the meal was brought to me. I was hungry. So, I enjoyed the meal. The train left Gwalior. I fell into sleep. When I woke up, I found the train at Jabalpur railway station. Then the train again rolled on. It reached Nagpur. I brought a small basket of oranges and had my dinner.
The train was now drawn by an electric engine. It now picked up a very high speed. I fell into deep sleep. When I woke up it was morning. Soon our train halted at Hyderabad station. I got off and came outside the platform. My friend Kamal was there to receive me.
