Introduction

The increasing tends in crime by teenagers is a matter of serious concern. Teenagers are increasingly arrested for alleged murder, rape, kidnappings, burglaries and theft charges etc.

Present Position: Television is fast spreading in the rural and remote tribal areas as well. The provision for 24 hour telecast and increase in channels, have endeared TV specially among children.

Responsibility for Crimes

The producers of serials and various programmers have neglected the real aims of entertainment. They aim at earning as much money as they can. Some of the main disadvantages of T.V. are as under:

Serials with criminal and sexual themes spoil the character of viewers. The rape scenes and bathroom scenes misguided the most. Mostly, the youths talk about such scenes. Besides, they recite obscene songs on the roads.

The various methods of committing crimes which are shown in the serials/movies, corrupt the society. Many criminals have confessed that they got the idea of committing the offence from some or the other serials/movies.

Nudeness is being served in the name of modernity-kissing, hugging and love making is all what we see on this small curtain. They tend to make us ‘so-called-modern’. Thus our culture is adversely affected.

Grave Consequences: Some grave consequences due to misuse of are as under:

  1. The primary effect of television viewing is by way of emulation of the ‘action’ or scene depicted on the screen. The children view the advertisements and emulate some of the popular characters.
  2. In some of the sensational murders by the teenagers investigation revealed that the criminal youngsters were prompted by a film or television programme. Hence, the manner and method of killing closely resembled the screen depiction.
  3. Heavy screen violence and aggression, even as a feature of television news, Mumbai formula films and many other television programmes, lead to desensitization among growing children.
  4. In the T.V. serials there is excessive portrayal of sex and violence.
  5. Often film and television show present violence as a justifiable means of setting disputes of daily life. It tends to inculcate among the audience, particularly children, an increasing willingness to use violence in real life.
  6. Such exposure contributes to the violent behavior of the young. It is even leading to criminal acts like murder and rape.
  7. There is an increasing evidence of alikeness between screen violence and actual aggressive behaviour.

Conclusion

It is essential to improve the quality of the programmes /serials/movies/pictures. The Board of Censor should reject vulgar, sexual and criminal ones. Only educative, social and historical ones should be allowed. It should, be kept in mind by the advertising agencies that commercial gains are of less importance than the consideration of larger social good and future of the country.
