A Wall Clock : Factual Description Essays in English for School Exams.

A wall clock is an instrument for measuring time. It is a big watch which is hung on a wall by a strong nail or peg so that the time could be noted from a distance. It has wooden or steel frame. It is often circular or rectangular and conical in shape. It has a glass front. The hands of the clock move on a dial behind the glass front.

A pendulum is attached below the dial. But these days in electronic wall clocks there is no pendulum. Old wall clocks have to be wound once a week. They produce a ticking sound. They have bells to strike hours. But modern quartz and electronic wall clocks need no winding. They work on a battery cell and do not produce any ticking sound. They also do not strike hours.

Wall clocks are no longer in big use. But still they have their importance in places like factories, offices, schools, colleges, temples and in important buildings. The inside of the wall clock is a complicated mechanism. It has hundreds of tiny parts, had together with very small screws. The springs and wheels make a work.
