The needle used for sewing or stitching is fixed to a rod inside the machine. When the wheel rotates, the rod moves which in turn moves the needle up and down. The thread is passed through the edge of the needle. It has a simple device which moves the cloth forward as the wheel is rotated. This, in short, is the process of stitching. There are certain attachments.
These make the sewing machine multipurpose. Before the invention of the sewing machine, people used to stitch their clothes with a simple needle. It was a boring job.
