Global Warming Introduction, Causes, Effects and Solutions

Global Warming: It is the increase in the global temperature (Earth’s Surface) due to increased level of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and Other harmful pollutants.

The most popular among the greenhouse gases is the Carbon Dioxide (CO2). The maximum amount of this gas is produced in America and Europe. The atmospheric temperature is raised by the greenhouse gases. It is told by the Intergovernmental Panel on climatic change that the Global Mean Temperature of the atmosphere has been risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.55 oC) in the 20th century. About half of it has risen in just 20 years. By the end of 21st century the world may get warmer by about 3.5 degrees.

The effect of this global rise in temperature is harmful. It is likely to bring about severe climatic changes. It will lead to greater evaporation of water from the oceans and water reservoirs. This means that world will become rainier and full of moisture. This can make the northern latitudes greener. But it can also cause devastating floods, as the rainfall pattern changes the world over. One greatly ruinous effect of the greenhouse gases can be visualized from the almost certain possibility that the global warming will make the snow on mountains to melt more quickly. This will rise the level of water in the oceans because of this some islands and sea-coasts in certain parts of the world may get submerged. Such effects are already being witnessed in some parts of the world.

It is very important that the production of greenhouse gases at such an alarming scale should be checked seriously. This will also decrease pollution all over the world, especially in urban areas. The burning of wood, coal, oil, fossil fuels and emissions from factories, motor vehicles, etc., leakage of harmful gases from refrigerators etc all add to the quantity of greenhouse gases in atmosphere and the global warming. Some gases used in refrigerators and perfumes are greatly responsible for thinning of the Ozone Layer (protects us from harmful Ultraviolet Radiations – UV Rays) over the earth’s atmosphere. This is also a main cause of global warming.

Global Warming can be stopped by making and maintaining the strict rules and regulations, and by making these, usage of fossil fuels, coal etc, practices controlled by the Governments. Govts. should also motivate and promote the renewable resources of energy so that machines and vehicles do not emit the pollutants.
