Kalpana Chawla the first Indian woman in space. Each one of us wants to touch the sky but very few of us persevere to chase our dreams. But Kalpana Chawla fulfilled her dreams by becoming the first Indian woman in space. She touched the sky. Kalpana Chawla left behind a legacy that would inspire many others to follow in her footsteps. Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Haryana’s Karnal district. She went to a local school to complete her primary education. Later she got a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering Elementary School. In her graduation days, she was the only woman in her batch. She got married to flight instructor Jean-Pierre Harrison and went to America and became a naturalized U.S citizen.
She is considered a national hero in India. She achieved a feat that many people only dream about. She was one among the 553 people who went to space. Just to put into perspective out of 7.8 billion people on the earth only 553 individuals have travelled to space.
She joined NASA’s space programme in 1994. And her first space mission began on November 19, 1997, as a part of a 6-astronaut crew on space shuttle Columbia Flight STS-87. On her first mission, Kalpana travelled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth. She lived around 372 hours in space. “You are just your intelligence” these are her words while traveling in the weightlessness of the space. She died on 1 February 2003, in the space shuttle Columbia disaster along with other six crew members. She will always be a great inspiration for all Indian women.
