No doubt, women are at the helm of affairs and enjoy equal rights and status with men. Still there is an undercurrent on the feeling of hatred towards them. Inspite of their enjoying very prestigious positions in many government offices, social agencies, educational institutions and private enterprises, they are the victims of many social evils in the society.

Dowry system in India is one of them, which is of cancerous type. It has ruined many blooming bridges though the government has passed anti dowry laws, still the cases of bride burning are in the society. It is much deep rooted in the blood and veins of many Indians.

If we look at the word ‘dowry’ (Dahej in Hindi) it means any kind of cash or properties which is being brought by a woman to her husband’s house at the time of marriage. It is in other words a kind of help to rehabilitate the newly wedded couple. Now it has become a social stigma on all of us. It has ruined many families. Most of the blooming girls remain unmarried because of the dowry system in India. But the husband’s parents (not all) forget that a girl is the highest dowry. In a marriage, two unknown souls join together to start a new life. We should be considerate to one another rather than forcing a parent to demand cash or another item. It is a great shame on our part that we look towards others to keep our egos satisfied. Purposeful and satisfactory life can only be led through our own hard earned money.
