Jawaharlal Nehru is the name that every Indian is aware of. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India. He was born on 14th November 1889 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). He grew up in an atmosphere of privilege at wealthy homes including a luxurious estate called the Anand Bhavan. His father’s name was Motilal Nehru who was a lawyer and his mother’s name was Swaroop Rani. He married Kamala Kaul on 8th February 1916 and they had a daughter Indira. At an early age, he was sent abroad for studies. He studied at Harrow and Cambridge universities of England. He completed his degree in the year 1910.
Pandit Nehru was an Indian independence activist and fought for India’s freedom along with other freedom fighters. He always wanted to make India a modern and civilized country. He is also known as the architect of modern India. He had a burning passion for his country’s independence. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. In 1920 he joined the Non-co-operation Movement started by Gandhiji. Jawaharlal Nehru was sent to Jail many times but he never gave up and finally, on 15th August 1947, India got her freedom. He wrote an autobiography “Discovery of India” during his time in prison from 1942 to 1946. He played a very important role in India’s Independence. Nehru became one of the most popular leaders in the world.
Nehru was very popular among children and they fondly called him ‘Chacha Nehru’. His birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day. He believed in the unity of the country and the liberty of mankind. He died on 27 May 1964 due to a cardiac arrest.
