Addiction refers to the need to consume substances that have damaging consequences on the user. Drug addiction is one of the major problems of developed and developing countries these days. Besides being chronic, it also has a relapsing nature. There are many reasons why youth and young adults are addicted to drugs and other harmful substances.
Parents, families, and teachers need to understand the root cause of this problem only then they can cure this. Teenagers and youth go through many things at the same time and they are not able to understand things. The biggest reason behind drug addiction is stress. Stress can be due to many reasons. Students take too much pressure of exams or career-related problems and then start taking drugs to recuse them because drugs provide instant pleasure and stress relief. Many people start taking drugs as an escape from their painful reality. Peer pressure is also a reason behind drug addiction. Some people take drugs to experience how it feels or under peer pressure and then get addicted to it. Drugs affect them mentally physically and emotionally. Drug addiction also causes the person to isolate themselves like they start ignoring people around them and start to lose interest in activities. They become either intense or have no food craving and also stop taking care of their hygiene and they also start avoiding to take shower. Drug addiction can be fatal if not treated.
We should help such people. It is not easy to quit it easily but we should help them to quit this deadly habit. Rehabilitation centers have been built for drug addicts. Many techniques are used, such as behavioural counselling, medication to treat the addiction, doctors also use medicines and therapies to treat them. But it is said that presence is better than cure! So, schools and colleges should run drug addiction awareness campaigns. The United Nations celebrates International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on the 26th of June. Drug addiction is affecting millions and needs to be treated carefully to prevent harm to society. Drug addicts need extra love and care to overcome this addiction.
