Essay on Diwali | My Favourite Festival | Essays Writing in English for Students Exams

India is a land of festivals. We celebrate more festivals than anywhere else in this world. We have at least one major festival every month. We have a festival to welcome season like Basant Panchami, we celebrate birthdays of our divine as festivals like Shivratri and Janmashtami, and even we celebrate harvesting as a festival called Onam. But my favourite festival is Diwali- “The festival of lights”! The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which “means row of lighted lamps”.

Diwali fall in either October or November every year and is determined by the position of the moon and according to the Hindu lunar calendar Diwali is overseeded on the 15th day of Kartika month of Hindu calendar.

Diwali means “a row of lights” it is a five-day-long festival celebrated by Hindus in India and the Indian diaspora. It starts with the Vasu Baras and is followed by Dhan Teras, Kali Chaudas, Diwali, and Bhai dooj. Diwali signifies the triumph of good over evil or righteousness over wickedness. Multiple stories are linked to this celebration. The most popular one tells the story about the great king Ram, one of the avatars of God Vishnu! Diwali is an auspicious day as it commemorates the return of Lord Ram to his kingdom with his brother Lakshman and wife Sita after fourteen years of exile. According to Ramayana, an ancient epic lord ram returned to Ayodhya after killing the demon Ravan who kidnapped his wife Sita. Upon the arrival of the king, people of Ayodhya lighted the streets and houses with oil lamps to celebrate the occasion. Diwali brings light and joy to our lives.

Diwali is my favourite festival because on the night of Diwali we worship goddess Laxmi the goddess of wealth, peace, and prosperity and we distribute sweets among friends and families. And we light lamps outside of our houses and it gets more exciting at night as lots of sky lanterns are released in the sky. But I think we should not burn crackers because it pollutes our air. This is one thing about Diwali that I want to change otherwise Diwali is my most favourite festival.
