X-rays are commonly used for determining the crystal structure of materials. This technique is known as X-ray crystallography. When X-rays are directed at a crystalline sample, they interact with the atoms in the crystal lattice, causing them to diffract. By analysing the pattern of diffraction, scientists can deduce the arrangement of atoms within the crystal, as each crystal structure produces a unique diffraction pattern. X-ray crystallography is a powerful tool used in many fields of science, including chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science, to determine the atomic and molecular structures of various substances.
