Olfactory indicators are substances that change smell in response to a change in pH. Two commonly used olfactory indicators are:-
Phenolphthalein: Phenolphthalein is a colourless compound that turns pink in alkaline (basic) solutions. While it's primarily used as a visual indicator, its odour can also change when the pH shifts.
Thymol blue: Thymol blue is another pH indicator that changes colour from yellow to blue over a pH range of 8.0 to 9.6. This colour change can be accompanied by a noticeable change in odour.
