If mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands, the stomach lining would be vulnerable to damage from its acidic contents. Mucus acts as a protective barrier, shielding the stomach epithelium from the corrosive effects of hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes. Without mucus, the stomach lining would be susceptible to erosion, ulceration, and inflammation, leading to conditions like gastritis and peptic ulcers. Additionally, impaired mucus production can compromise nutrient absorption, impair digestion, and increase the risk of infection. Overall, the absence of gastric mucus secretion would severely disrupt gastric function and compromise digestive health.
