The energy currency in living organisms is adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is produced primarily through cellular respiration, a metabolic process occurring in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells. During cellular respiration, glucose and other organic molecules undergo a series of enzymatic reactions, ultimately leading to the production of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. Additionally, ATP can be generated through substrate-level phosphorylation during glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. ATP serves as the primary source of energy for cellular processes, including muscle contraction, active transport, and biosynthesis, providing the fuel necessary for life's functions.
