Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen and involves the complete breakdown of glucose into carbon dioxide and water, yielding a large amount of ATP. It takes place in the mitochondria and is highly efficient, producing up to 38 molecules of ATP per glucose molecule. In contrast, anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the incomplete breakdown of glucose into lactic acid (in animals) or ethanol and carbon dioxide (in yeast and some bacteria). It occurs in the cytoplasm, yields a smaller amount of ATP, and is less efficient compared to aerobic respiration
