Once, the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, renowned for his wisdom and sense of justice, decided to test the intellect of his subjects by posing a challenging question to anyone who could answer it.
The question was this: “What is the difference between a saint and a hypocrite?”
People from all walks of life attempted to answer the question, but none could satisfy Akbar’s curiosity. As the days passed, the emperor grew increasingly impatient.
One day, Akbar’s eyes fell upon a humble but wise man named Birbal, who was known throughout the kingdom for his intelligence and wit. Intrigued, Akbar summoned Birbal to the court and presented him with the question.
Birbal, with a twinkle in his eye, replied, “Your Majesty, the difference between a saint and a hypocrite is like the difference between sugar and salt.”
Akbar was puzzled by Birbal’s response and asked him to explain further.
Birbal continued, “Your Majesty, when you taste sugar, it always tastes sweet, no matter how it is presented or hidden. Similarly, a true saint’s actions always reflect purity and goodness, evident to all who observe. On the other hand, when you taste salt, even if it is hidden in food, its taste cannot be concealed. Likewise, a hypocrite’s true nature eventually reveals itself, no matter how hard they try to disguise it.”
Impressed by Birbal’s insightful answer, Akbar acknowledged his wisdom and rewarded him generously. From that day forward, Akbar and Birbal developed a close bond of friendship and mutual respect, and Birbal became one of the most trusted advisors in Akbar’s court.
The tale of Akbar meeting Birbal and their subsequent exchanges became legendary, showcasing the profound wisdom and wit of Birbal, and the enduring friendship between the emperor and his trusted advisor.
